Fraxel FTX vs. MOXI vs. IPL: What’s the Difference?
If you’ve been researching laser treatments, you’ve probably heard names like Fraxel FTX, MOXI and IPL—and it can be difficult to understand what actually makes them different.
The answer isn’t simply which device is “best.”
At WestEnd MedSpa, we look at your skin type, concerns, lifestyle, treatment history and desired downtime before deciding which technology makes sense for you.
Here’s what you should know.
Fraxel FTX vs. Traditional Fraxel
You may already know Fraxel as a fractional resurfacing treatment used to improve the appearance of sun damage, pigmentation, uneven texture, fine lines and acne scarring.
Fraxel FTX is the newest evolution of Fraxel technology at WestEnd, giving our providers greater flexibility to customize treatments—from our lighter Fraxel FTX Glow to more corrective fractional resurfacing.
WestEnd is proud to be the only provider in Colorado with Fraxel FTX.
The advantage? We aren’t limited to a one-size-fits-all approach. Treatment intensity can be selected based on the individual patient, their concerns and the results they’re hoping to achieve.
What About MOXI?
MOXI is often talked about as a lighter fractional laser treatment for pigmentation, early sun damage, uneven tone and general skin maintenance.
But there’s an important similarity many patients don't realize:
MOXI uses a 1927 nm wavelength—and Fraxel FTX also offers a 1927 nm wavelength.
At WestEnd, our lighter treatment utilizing Fraxel FTX technology is Fraxel FTX Glow.
Think of Fraxel FTX Glow as our answer to the lighter treatment experience patients often associate with MOXI.
It can be used as a lighter approach focused on concerns such as pigmentation, sun damage, uneven tone and overall skin refresh.
MOXI and Fraxel FTX are different devices, but their shared 1927 nm wavelength helps explain why there can be overlap in the types of superficial concerns they address.
Nervous About Fraxel FTX?
One of the biggest misconceptions about Fraxel is that every treatment has to be aggressive.
It doesn't.
Fraxel FTX allows us to customize treatment intensity based on your skin and goals. Someone looking for a lighter refresh may have a very different treatment plan than someone seeking more significant correction of texture or acne scarring.
For patients concerned about comfort, WestEnd also offers Pro-Nox, a patient-controlled nitrous oxide and oxygen system that can help ease anxiety and discomfort during treatment.
The goal is to create a treatment plan that makes sense for your skin, your comfort level and your goals.
Can Fraxel FTX Be Used on Darker Skin Tones?
Skin tone is an important part of laser treatment planning—but appearance alone doesn't tell the entire story.
Providers often use the Fitzpatrick Skin Type Scale as one part of evaluating how skin responds to UV exposure. A patient's natural pigmentation, tendency to burn or tan, recent sun exposure, treatment history and individual concerns all matter.

Having more melanin doesn't automatically mean laser treatments are off-limits. It means treatment selection needs to be thoughtful.
The technology, wavelength, settings, treatment intensity and experience of the provider all matter, particularly because inappropriate laser or light treatments can increase the risk of unwanted pigment changes or burns.
That's one reason a consultation before treatment is so important.
IPL and Fraxel FTX Are Not the Same
Another common misconception is that IPL is simply another type of Fraxel.
It isn't.
In fact, IPL isn't a laser.
IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light and uses broad-spectrum light. It is commonly used to address concerns such as visible sun damage, brown spots, redness and vascular concerns in appropriately selected patients.
An easy way to remember the difference:
IPL → Think color
Brown spots • redness • visible sun damage
Fraxel FTX → Think resurfacing + renewal
Pigmentation • texture • fine lines • acne scars • overall skin quality
That doesn't mean one is universally better than the other.
Sometimes IPL is appropriate. Sometimes Fraxel FTX makes more sense. Sometimes another technology is a better fit. And for some patients, a long-term skin plan may incorporate different technologies at different times.
So, Which Treatment Is Right for You?
Don't choose a laser simply because it's trending.
The right treatment starts with understanding your skin and what you're actually trying to change.
At WestEnd, consultation is part of the process. We evaluate your skin, goals, lifestyle and treatment history before recommending a technology and treatment plan.
Whether that ultimately means Fraxel FTX Glow, Fraxel FTX, IPL, Clear + Brilliant or another treatment, the goal is the same:
Your skin. Your goals. Your treatment plan.
